That’s how it begins. The heart-wrenching letter in that little black envelope that I’m not supposed to open. I like the way you curl the ascenders on your ‘l’s, or is it curled? I don’t know which tense you’re currently in, which habits you left behind with me. I wonder if the next letter you send to me will look the same; will your ‘o’s connect to your ‘u’s as inconsistently as they do? Will you sign it with ‘love’? How many ‘x’s will be at the end of the letter you send to me where you tell me that you miss me and you love me and you made a huge mistake?

I wonder how much of it will be foreign to me. Like the sunglasses I saw you wearing but didn’t recognise because they were post-me. Or those new jeans you got that didn’t seem to fit you right because they weren’t as mine as they should have been. I never saw my reflection in your glasses as you tried them on and I never struggled to pull your jeans off your waist on the bed that we used to call ours. I wonder how long it took for you to stop waking up and wondering why I wasn’t there. Or how many nights you wished you had someone to bring you tea in bed when your tummy was upset the way I used to do.
I wonder how easy it was for you to replace me the way you did.

I wonder how long the half-empty box of condoms lasted that I left in the drawer of my past-tense bedside table. I wonder if you care how much it hurts me that I past-tense paid for those post-me fucks.

Do you still wear the shirt that you kept? The one I sprayed my deodorant on so you could wear it when you missed me. I know you would have washed it by now but do you still wear it? It was too small for me anyway so I don’t even mind that you kept it but do you still wear it to bed and when you wear it to bed do you ever miss me even just a little bit?

Your shirt still smells like your past-tense perfume, in case you were wondering.
It’s in my pillowcase for those nights when I’m weak and I open that little black envelope you once gave me when you promised past-tense forever.

I was going to hand it back to you, the letter. I had this plan that I would hand it back to you and I would make you read it and I would tell you to give it back to me when it was true again. I couldn’t do it, though. I knew, even then, I knew I wouldn’t get it back.

You had a drawer, I remember, a drawer full of letters and gifts and memories from pre-me. A drawer that I always wondered but never truly believed I would end up in. When I made you that Christmas present, I knew where it was going. I collected (almost) every single train ticket I took to see you for the entire first year of our relationship and I framed them all and I handed it to you and I knew it was going straight into that drawer and I don’t think you even cared that I put a lot of fucking effort into that gift and it meant a lot to me and I don’t think you cared when you put it into that drawer where you hide away the people who were foolish enough to think that they were present-tense special.

So where does that leave me?
You called me the other night. You called me and you were crying and that wasn’t foreign at all.
You told me that you present-tense miss me and you post-me took me for granted. I wish it felt better than it did, but the truth is, it wasn’t news.
You told me I was special. That I understood you more than anyone else in that drawer ever did.

I heard the voice who wrote the letter signed with love.
For a split second I wanted to cry with you.
I wanted to ask you why you fucked it up.
I wanted to tell you that you’re always so fucking worried about how green the grass is on the other side that you never stop to look around and appreciate what you’ve past-tense got.

I wanted to ask you when I should expect your letter.

I know it’s not coming. I know.
But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t keep my phone close to my person.
I’d be lying if I told you your past-tense perfume wasn’t present-tense familiar to my nostrils.
I’d be lying if I told you I hadn’t studied each stroke, stem and bowl of your ‘forever’-tense letter, nestled in that lowercase ‘matthew ♡’ black envelope that I promised myself I wouldn’t open because I promised myself I wouldn’t cry because me too, and fuck you. Even now.

I miss the ascenders of your ‘l’s.
I miss the strokes of your ‘o’s.
I miss the vertex of your ‘v’s.
I miss the bowls of your ‘e’s.
I miss the descenders of your ‘y’s.
I miss the inconsistent kerning between your ‘o’s and your ‘u’s.

In June of 2009, a rare total solar eclipse blanketed certain portions of the planet in total darkness. Czech photographer Miloslav Druckmüller traveled to the middle of the Pacific ocean to the Marshall Islands to capture the incredible event.

To create the photos above, he compiled over 40 images shot from two different cameras.
